Halloween popcorn mix is the snack bowl that empties first. Popped corn, a light sweet coating, and a handful of candy and pretzels from the pantry. Make a big batch for movie night or portion into bags for trunk-or-treat.

Pantry-friendly here means swaps are welcome. Amounts are still listed so you can cook without guessing.

Yield: About 12 cups mix · Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

Mix

  • 10 cups popped popcorn (from ½ cup / 100 g kernels, or 1 large microwave bag, unpopped discarded)
  • 2 cups pretzel sticks, broken
  • 1½ cups candy corn or chopped leftover candy
  • 1 cup roasted peanuts (optional)
  • 1 cup semisweet chips
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ½ tsp flaky salt or ¼ tsp table salt

Steps

  1. Pop the popcorn and pick out any unpopped kernels. Spread on a large sheet pan.
  2. Melt the butter with the brown sugar (and a pinch of salt) until bubbling, about 2 minutes. Pour over the popcorn and toss to coat. Bake at 250°F for 20 minutes, stirring once, if you want a crispier coat. Or skip the oven and toss warm.
  3. Cool 10 minutes. Toss with pretzels, candy corn, chocolate chips, and chopped leftover candy. Taste and add a pinch more salt if it needs it.
  4. Transfer to a big bowl or portion into treat bags.

Use-what-you-have swaps

  • Skip peanuts for school bags

Serve / store

Best within 2 days in an airtight container. Humidity softens the popcorn, so keep the lid on between rounds.

Skip candy with nuts if you are packing classroom bags. Label bags with the main allergens you know about. Tip from our chaotic kitchen: read the ingredient list once before you start, preheat before you mix wet and dry, and set a timer even when you think you will remember. Taste as you go when the recipe allows it, and write a note on the recipe card if you changed a spice amount so next time is easier.
