Thanksgiving 2026 lands on Thursday, November 26. That is four weeks from this Monday if you are reading on October 26. Plenty of time if you stop trying to invent a restaurant tasting menu in your head and start using a calendar.

This countdown assumes a normal kitchen, a normal grocery store, and at least one person who will ask what time dinner is every day of the week.

Week of Oct 26: decisions only

Do these five things before you buy a single decorative gourd:

  1. Guest count (adults, kids, dietary needs)
  2. Location (your house vs traveling)
  3. Turkey plan (roast, smoked, or store-bought carved)
  4. Potluck yes/no and who brings what
  5. Budget range for food and flowers together

Text the group chat now. Silence creates duplicate pies and zero napkins.

Write the menu on one page. Main protein, two starches, two vegetables, one cranberry, one dessert you will actually finish. That is enough food.

Helpful tools:

Week of Nov 2: pantry and paper goods

Shop the boring aisle while stores are calm.

  • Broth, flour, butter, sugar, salt, pepper, foil, parchment
  • Coffee, tea, sparkling water, wine if you serve it
  • Trash bags, paper towels, extra dish soap
  • Serving spoons, if you always discover you own three

Order specialty ingredients online only if your town will not have them. Do not order a second gravy boat “for content.”

Make cranberry sauce this weekend if you like it cold. It keeps.

Simple make-ahead cranberry sauce

  • 12 oz fresh cranberries
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup orange juice or water
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: orange zest, cinnamon stick

Simmer until berries burst and the sauce thickens, about 12 minutes. Cool, refrigerate up to a week.

Week of Nov 9: the fresh plan and the freezer

Confirm turkey size: about 1 to 1.25 pounds per person if you want leftovers, less if you do not. If it is frozen, start thawing in the fridge days ahead (roughly 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds). Put it on a tray so it does not drip on the yogurt.

Freeze what you can now:

  • Pie dough
  • Dinner rolls (bake day-of or reheat)
  • Extra stock in flat freezer bags

Assign oven real estate. Write which dish needs which temperature. Two dishes at 350 is easier than four competing temps.

Week of Nov 16: deep prep

This is the week that saves your Thursday.

  • Chop onions, celery, carrots for stuffing or mirepoix; bag them
  • Toast bread cubes for stuffing; store airtight
  • Make gravy base (roux + stock), refrigerate, finish with drippings Thursday
  • Set the table with everything except food; photograph it so you remember where candlesticks go
  • Wash serving dishes and label sticky notes on each platter

Make-ahead roasted vegetable tray (reheat Thursday)

Toss cubed squash, red onion, and Brussels sprouts with oil, salt, pepper. Roast at 425°F until browned. Cool, refrigerate. Reheat 15 minutes at 400°F while turkey rests.

Nov 23 to 25: the short runway

Monday/Tuesday: grocery run for produce, dairy, bakery. Brine or dry-brine turkey if that is your method.

Wednesday: - Desserts baked or picked up - Casseroles assembled - Kids’ activities staged in another room - Coolers clean and ready if guests bring food

Thursday morning: turkey in on time, coffee on, playlist on, phones charged for the one relative who wants a photo of everyone chewing.

Day-of timing skeleton (adjust to your turkey)

  • Turkey out of fridge 45 to 60 minutes before roasting
  • Roast turkey first; everything else orbits its rest time
  • Reheat sides while turkey rests 20 to 30 minutes
  • Carve after sides are hot, not before

You will forget something. Someone will bring a salad in a bowling bag. Dinner will still happen.

What to delete from the fantasy menu

  • Three desserts when one great pie plus ice cream works
  • A homemade centerpiece that needs floral foam skills
  • Matching napkin rings for toddlers

Keep the day edible and warm. That is the brand of hosting people remember.
