One Christmas Decorating Rule for Busy Homes
Working households do not need a themed vignette on every ledge. They need a rule that stops the bin explosion.
The rule
Every surface is a yes or a no. Yes surfaces get decorations from the bin you already own. No surfaces stay clear for homework, mail, and coffee.
Typical yes: tree, mantel or one shelf, front door.
Typical no: kitchen counters, kids' desks, the dining table you actually eat on (use a runner only if it survives crumbs).
Pull day (60 minutes)
- Open the bin once.
- Trash broken lights and mystery tangles you will never fix.
- Put yes-surface items out.
- Close the bin and put it away — do not leave it in the hallway "to finish later."
If the bin is sparse
Sparse is allowed. A wreath you already have and warm lamps beat a cart of matching newness you have to store in January.
Kids and ornaments
Give them one low branch or one tray table as their zone. The heirloom breakables stay high. Peace is a decorating choice too.
