Helping a Senior Dog Through Cold Weather

Stiff joints, shorter walks, and warm beds. Gentle ways to keep an older dog comfortable as the temperature drops this fall and winter.

Older dogs feel the cold in their joints just like we do.

Comfort basics

  • Orthopedic or raised bed away from drafts
  • Shorter, more frequent walks rather than one long one
  • A sweater or coat for thin-coated or small seniors
  • Rugs on slippery floors for traction

Watch for

Limping, reluctance to climb stairs, or stiffness after rest. Ask your vet about pain management and joint supplements, don't give human pain meds, many are toxic to dogs.

Keep them engaged

Sniff walks and puzzle feeders keep brains busy when bodies slow down.
