Candy corn bark turns the candy nobody finishes into a tray people fight over. Melted chocolate, a scatter of candy corn and pretzels, a chill in the fridge, break into shards. That is the recipe.
Halloween leftovers are a logistics problem. This is the fix that uses the weird minis, the candy corn still in the bag, and the pretzels from the snack cabinet. Beautifully Chaotic Life is not above white chocolate and dark chocolate on the same sheet pan.
No oven. No mixer. Kid help welcome for the topping step, with clean hands and a short window before the chocolate sets.
Yield: About 1¼ lb bark · 20 shards · Time: 15 min + 30 min set
Ingredients
Bark
- 12 oz (340 g) semisweet or white chocolate chips
- 1 tsp oil
- 1 cup candy corn
- 1 cup chopped leftover candy bars
- Optional: ¼ cup pretzels, crushed
Steps
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment. Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second bursts, stirring until smooth.
- Pour onto the parchment and spread into a rough rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
- While the chocolate is wet, press on candy corn, crushed pretzels, and any leftover candy bits. Sprinkle with a tiny pinch of flaky salt if you like sweet-salty.
- Chill 20 to 30 minutes until firm. Break into shards with your hands or a knife.
Use-what-you-have swaps
- All white chocolate for a brighter tray
- Half dark, half white, swirled with a toothpick
- Crushed pretzels, popcorn, or chopped nuts instead of candy bars
- Candy corn only, or skip candy corn and use chopped bars alone
- Peppermint candies after Christmas for a seasonal remix
- A tiny pinch of flaky salt on top for sweet-salty
Tips from a real kitchen
- Microwave chocolate in 20-second bursts and stir between each. Scorched chocolate seizes and turns chalky.
- A teaspoon of neutral oil loosens thick chips so they spread.
- Work toppings on while the chocolate is still glossy. Once it dulls, pieces will not stick.
- Chill on a flat shelf. A tilted sheet makes thick and thin ends.
- Score lightly with a knife after 10 minutes of chill if you want neater rectangles instead of rustic shards.
Make-ahead
Make up to a week ahead and store airtight in a cool spot. If the kitchen runs warm, refrigerate. Layer parchment between stacks so toppings do not weld together. For parties, break into shards the day of so edges look fresh.
Serve and store
Pile in a bowl or tin. Pack in treat bags with a twist tie for classroom parties (check school candy rules first). Keep out of hot cars. Soft bark is sad bark.
If it goes sideways
- **Chocolate seized:** Steam or water got in. Start over with dry bowls, or stir in a little more warm melted chocolate to loosen mild seizures.
- **Toppings fall off:** They went on too late. Remelt a thin chocolate drizzle to glue them.
- **Bloom (white streaks):** Temperature swing. Still edible; next time store cooler and sealed.
