Trunk-or-treat does not require a theme-park build. Most of the best trunks we see start with what is already in the garage and the linen closet, then add one or two store runs only where volume matters.

## Raid before you buy

Pull orange and black anything: throw blankets, tissue paper, paper plates, ribbon, leftover birthday banners you can flip to the blank side. Cardboard boxes become tombstones with gray paint or marker. A camping lantern or two replaces a string of outlet-hungry lights when you are parked in a lot.

Painter's tape, scissors, and zip ties will matter more than a perfect prop list. Pack them first.

## Layout that works from a folding chair

Open the trunk or hatch fully and build a shallow scene, not a cave kids have to crawl into. Keep candy at adult arm's reach on a tray table beside you. Put taller decor toward the back wall of the trunk so little costumes do not knock it over.

If you want soft light, battery warm-white string lights are the one buy that usually pays off. Skip open flames entirely in a parking lot full of tulle and last-minute costumes.

## A few finds if the garage comes up short

A plastic orange or black tablecloth taped inside the hatch gives you an instant backdrop. A roll of butcher paper and a thick marker make signs faster than printed cutouts. Fake spiderweb only if you will also bring a trash bag for the cleanup, because it travels home on every sweater.

Borrow before you buy multiples. One neighborhood group text often turns up extra pumpkins, crates, and caution tape by afternoon.

## Candy and exit plan

Portion candy into a bowl you can empty into a bin when you are done so leftovers are not melting on the passenger seat. Bring water, a phone charger, and a sweater. Trunk-or-treat nights run colder than the driveway photo suggests.

The trunks people remember are friendly and easy to approach, not the ones that took three weekends. Use what you have, light it softly, and sit where you can see the kids coming.
