The menu spiral starts the minute someone asks what the household is doing for Thanksgiving. Stop it at the guest list.
Per the U.S. Office of Personnel Management holiday schedule for 2026, Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 26. That is four weeks from today if you are reading this on October 26. Plenty of time for a calm plan. Not plenty of time if you wait until the week of.
The BCL order of operations
- Write who is actually coming (and who is a soft maybe).
- Note dietary needs in the same note, not in a separate group chat that will die.
- Only then pick a protein and two sides you can execute without a new personality.
- Assign one bring-item per household that can travel.
If you are traveling instead of hosting, the same logic holds: confirm beds and arrival windows before you debate pie crusts.
What this is not
This is not a tablescape brief. It is a calendar fact plus a sequencing rule. Federal holiday schedules do not cook the turkey. They do keep you from pretending November 26 is sometime later.
Put the date on the shared family calendar tonight. Menu tabs can wait until the names are real.
Four weeks is a feature
October 26 to November 26 is enough time to send a clear note, hear back, and adjust chairs. It is not enough time if you wait for a perfect menu board first. Hosts burn out when the guest list is a rumor and the grocery list is a novel.
If relatives are deciding late, give a reply-by date. Soft maybes become hard numbers on that day. People who cannot commit can still be loved without holding your oven hostage.
Travelers should lock flights and beds with the same seriousness. A beautiful side dish does not replace a confirmed pillow. Put both on the same family note so nobody is surprised in the group chat.
If you host every year and feel resentful already, the guest list conversation is also the boundary conversation. Fewer seats can be the kindest plan.
The message that gets real answers
Vague invitations get vague replies. Send one message to everyone, in one thread, that answers the questions people would otherwise ask one at a time: the date, the time you plan to eat (not just the time doors open), whether partners and kids are included, and a reply-by date about ten days out. Ask two things back: a yes or no, and any allergies or dietary needs. Keeping both answers in the same thread means you are not later scrolling three chats to remember who is vegetarian.
When the reply-by date passes, send one friendly nudge to the people who have not answered. After that, plan for the confirmed number. A late yes can usually squeeze in; a phantom maybe that never shows still costs you a chair and a portion.
Turn the headcount into a plan
Once the number is real, the rest is arithmetic. A common rule of thumb for a whole turkey is about a pound to a pound and a half per person, with the higher end if you want leftovers. That means a 14-pound bird covers roughly ten to twelve guests. Buy it early enough to thaw in the refrigerator, which takes about a day for every four to five pounds, so a frozen 14-pounder needs to move to the fridge by the Saturday or Sunday before.
Count chairs next, then plates, glasses, and serving spoons. If you come up short, ask a guest to bring folding chairs rather than buying them. Then decide how many sides you will cook versus assign. Most hosts do well making the main and one or two sides, and handing out the rest by category: a vegetable, a bread, a dessert, drinks. Assign by category instead of by recipe so nobody shows up with a duplicate casserole.
When the names are real, set the table
Once the guest count is locked, the table is the easy part. A round Thanksgiving tablecloth and centerpiece set covers a crowd, DII harvest placemats and napkins handle a smaller table, and maple-leaf napkin rings with cloth napkins make eight seats look intentional. Buy for the number you confirmed, not the number you hoped for. (Affiliate links.)
