Scarecrows are forgiving. The messier, the better. Beautifully Chaotic Life builds this from flannel you already own, a hat, and optional raffia that does not require a farm store. If the raffia ends up in the car until March, welcome to parenthood.

## Closet pull

- Flannel or denim shirt, untucked
- Jeans (a small hole is character, not failure)
- Sun hat, bucket hat, or straw hat
- Twine, ribbon, or a rope belt
- Optional: felt or fabric scraps for patches

Adults and kids wear the same formula. Size the hat so it stays on in wind.

## Make it read from the sidewalk

### Patches

Cut squares from felt or fabric scraps. Safety-pin them on the shirt and one jeans knee. Crooked is correct.

### Straw effect

Raffia from a fall wreath, or shredded paper-bag strips. Tuck bundles at cuffs and collar. Tie lightly with twine so they do not slide into sleeves.

### Face

Blush circles on cheeks. Eyeliner or face crayon stitched smile. Freckles if they want them. Skip anything near the eyes that smears into vision.

## Step-by-step, start to porch

1. Flannel and jeans on. Sleeves rolled once.
2. Pin three or four fabric squares as patches.
3. Tie raffia bundles at wrists and ankles with twine.
4. Tuck raffia under the hat brim.
5. Rope or twine belt loosely at the waist.
6. Blush circles. Stitched smile. Freckles optional.
7. Boots or sneakers. Jacket plan for cold (denim jacket over flannel still reads scarecrow).
8. Hallway walk. Trim raffia that trips feet.
9. Photo. Leave.

## Family set ideas

Pair with a crow (all-black base and paper beak) or a pumpkin (orange sweater and green hat). One adult can be the farmer in the same flannel aisle without raffia. Shared twine keeps the craft pile small.

## Comfort checks

Raffia can itch. Put a long-sleeve layer under the flannel. Keep raffia out of mouths for toddlers. Hats need chin elastic if wind is serious. Eyes must stay clear of dangling straw.

## After Halloween

Pull raffia over the trash can outdoors. Untie twine. Shirt and jeans into the wash. Hat back to the closet. Patches unpin and go into the dress-up bin for next year's farmer.

## Done looks like

A scarecrow that looks intentional from ten feet away and comfortable from the first house to the last. No emergency craft-store run. Straw optional. Joy not optional.

## No raffia version

Shred a paper grocery bag into strips. Or skip straw entirely and lean on patches, hat, and face. Porch photos still read scarecrow if the hat and flannel are right.

## Field notes for real houses

This guide assumes interruptions. Someone will ask for a snack mid-step. Pause, handle the snack, return to the next numbered action. The order matters more than the mood. If you only finish half, park a sticky note on the fridge with the next step for tonight. Momentum likes breadcrumbs.

If money is tight this month, skip every optional purchase link. Use jars, cereal boxes, grocery totes, and clothes you already own. Links are for gaps, not for status. Beautifully Chaotic Life would rather you finish the project with tape than delay joy for a package.

## Makeup map

Cream blush circles high on cheeks. Brown eyeliner stitch marks at the mouth corners, three to five dashes. Freckles with a light brown pencil. Skip red lipstick on toddlers if kissing parents care about stains. Set with a light dusting of translucent powder if you have it so sidewalk heat does not melt the stitches.
