After Halloween, costumes either become next year's problem or next month's clutter. The goal is a clear decision: keep for next year, compress for storage, or exit the house. Tools help only after you decide.

Sort first (before you buy anything)

Make three piles on the bed:

  • Keep: still fits, still loved, or needed for a school event.
  • Compress: bulky pieces you will not need until next October.
  • Exit: stained, broken, or never worn again. Donate or trash the same day.

Only then pull storage tools for the Keep and Compress piles.

The kit

1. Clear hanging covers for pieces that should stay on a hanger

Lightweight Clear Hanging Garment Bags (5 Pack, 48 inch) keep dress-up gowns, character coats, and "nice" pieces dust-free without hiding what is inside. Clear plastic beats opaque bags when you are hunting for one specific cape in nine months.

Use it like this: one bag per costume that hangs well. Label the zipper with painter's tape and the year.

2. Vacuum bags for bulky soft pieces

Amazon Basics Vacuum Storage Bags, Large, 5-Pack with Hand Pump compress stuffed costumes, tulle, and off-season sweaters. The hand pump matters when you do not want to drag a vacuum into the bedroom.

Use it like this: do not overstuff. Seal fully before pumping. Store flat under the bed or on a high shelf.

3. Underbed bins for hard pieces and accessories

IRIS USA 40 Qt Plastic Under Bed Storage Nestable Organizer Bin with Lids (4-Pack) holds masks, props, shoes, and the small pieces that vanish in vacuum bags. Lids and buckles keep curious kids (and pets) out of the glitter.

Use it like this: one bin per kid or one bin per holiday. Keep a packing list on the inside of the lid.

Closet rule for next year

If a costume does not fit in one hanging cover plus one bin share, it is too much to keep. Edit again before you buy storage for storage.
