A hot chocolate bar is less a recipe and more a setup that makes people linger. Pot of hot cocoa, mugs, and toppings from the candy bowl and baking shelf. Perfect after trick-or-treat or for a sleepover.

Pantry-friendly here means swaps are welcome. Amounts are still listed so you can cook without guessing.

**Yield:** 4 mugs · **Time:** 15 minutes

## Ingredients

**Hot chocolate**

- 4 cups milk
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa
- pinch salt
- ½ cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- 1 tsp vanilla

**Bar toppings**

- 2 cups marshmallows
- ½ cup whipped cream
- ¼ cup chocolate syrup or caramel
- ½ cup crushed candy canes or leftover candy
- pinch cinnamon

## Steps

1. Make a big batch of hot chocolate on the stove: warm milk with cocoa powder, sugar, a pinch of salt, and vanilla. Or heat your favorite mix with milk instead of water for a richer base. Keep it on low.
2. Set out mugs and toppings in small bowls: mini marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate chips, crushed candy canes or leftover candy, cinnamon, and pretzel sticks for stirring.
3. Label anything with nuts. Put a ladle in the pot and let people build their own.
4. Keep a small pot of water-based cocoa for dairy-free guests if needed, or offer a marked oat milk option.

## Use-what-you-have swaps

- Packet cocoa: make per box, still offer the measured toppings bar

## Serve / store

Cocoa base keeps warm on low up to 2 hours. Stir often so it does not scorch. Leftover base refrigerates 3 days.

Paper cups with sleeves save the dish pile when the group is big. Fancy mugs for the photo, paper for the chaos. Tip from our chaotic kitchen: read the ingredient list once before you start, preheat before you mix wet and dry, and set a timer even when you think you will remember. Taste as you go when the recipe allows it, and write a note on the recipe card if you changed a spice amount so next time is easier.
