Halloween brownies should taste like a party and look like one too. This batch starts with a fudgy 9×13 base (scratch or a good box mix) and finishes with whatever candy is already in the bowl by the door. No specialty molds. No fondant. Just chocolate, a thin swipe of frosting for glue, and the good leftovers from trick-or-treat. Make them the afternoon before, or bake after the kids are in costume and let the candy do the decorating.

Pantry-friendly here means swaps are welcome. Amounts are still listed so you can cook without guessing.

**Yield:** One 9×13 pan · \~24 squares · **Time:** 20 min prep · 28-32 min bake · 30 min cool

## Ingredients

**Scratch brownies**

- 1 cup (2 sticks / 226 g) unsalted butter
- 8 oz (225 g) semisweet chocolate, chopped (or 1⅓ cups chips)
- 1¾ cups (350 g) granulated sugar
- ¼ cup (50 g) packed brown sugar
- 4 large eggs, room temp
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup (120 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (45 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp fine salt
- Optional: ½ cup chocolate chips in batter

**Box-mix path**

- 1 family-size brownie mix (\~18 oz)
- Eggs, oil, water per box (usually 2 eggs + ½ cup oil + ¼ cup water)

**Candy topping**

- 1½-2 cups leftover Halloween candy, chopped
- ⅓ cup semisweet chips + 1 tsp oil (optional drizzle)

## Steps

1. Heat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13-inch pan with parchment so the long sides hang over for easy lift-out. Lightly grease the parchment.
2. Melt the butter in a large microwave-safe bowl in 30-second bursts, or in a saucepan over low heat. Whisk in the sugar until the mix looks glossy and thick. Cool 2 minutes so the eggs do not scramble.
3. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, then the vanilla, until the batter looks smooth and a little shiny.
4. Sift the cocoa, flour, salt, and baking powder over the bowl. Fold with a spatula until no dry pockets remain. Stop as soon as it comes together. Overmixing makes brownies tough.
5. Bake on the center rack 28 to 32 minutes for scratch (start checking at 26), or follow the box time for a 9×13\. A toothpick in the center should come out with a few moist crumbs, not wet batter and not bone dry.
6. Cool in the pan on a rack at least 45 minutes. Warm brownies tear when you press candy in.
7. Warm the frosting 10 to 15 seconds in the microwave until it spreads like soft butter. Spread a thin, even layer over the cooled brownies. Press candy into the frosting right away so it sticks. Leave gaps so every piece looks different.
8. Chill 20 minutes if you want clean cuts. Lift out with the parchment and cut into 24 squares with a hot, wiped knife.

## Use-what-you-have swaps

- No candy → chopped chocolate/pretzels/nuts
- Nut-free → chocolate-only candy
- 9×9 pan → +5-8 min, \~16 squares

## Serve / store

Serve at room temperature so the frosting stays soft. Stack on a cake stand or a sheet pan lined with parchment. Leftovers keep covered at room temp up to 3 days, or freeze (without candy) up to a month and top after thawing.

Snap a photo before the tray empties. Tag us when you post, and tell us which candy disappeared first. If your house runs on peanut-free rules, skip the Reese's and lean on Skittles, Smarties, and candy corn. Same method, same chaos, still delicious.
