A family group costume from one closet raid, clear roles, a shared color story, and the few findable add-ons that make it read as a theme instead of four random outfits. Start with what is already in the closet or recycling bin, then fill gaps with a short store list so you are not hunting at 4 p.m. on Halloween.
Time: 45-60 minutes the night before (or 20 if pieces already exist)
What you need (closet / house first)
- One shared color or pattern (all black, all plaid, all denim, or all white shirts)
- One “lead” prop per person (hat, ears, clipboard, cape, badge)
- Comfortable shoes you can walk candy routes in
- Phone flashlight + a tote for candy
Grab these if you are missing pieces
- Black witch hat (adult sizes)
- Black cat ear headband
- Mehron Paradise AQ face paint
- Aleene's Original Tacky Glue, 8 Fl Oz
- Hobby Lobby seasonal hats/felt: Hobby Lobby
- Michaels Halloween accessories: Michaels Halloween
- Target same-day accessories: Target Halloween
Steps
- Pick the theme in one sentence (“black cats + witch,” “news crew,” “farm family scarecrows,” “spies in black”). Write names on painter’s tape.
- Raid closets for base layers in that palette. Set rejects back immediately so the bed does not become a second closet.
- Assign one prop per person. Buy only gaps (hat/ears/paint), not a full costume.
- Do a 60-second mirror check: can a neighbor guess the theme? If not, add one louder prop (hat or ears), not five quiet ones.
- Bag candy tote + water + phone. Put shoes by the door tonight.
Variations
- Toddlers: pajamas in the theme color + ears. Warmth beats perfection.
- Teens who refuse themes: all-black + one shared accessory (red scarf, sunglasses).
Group costumes fail from too many props, not too few. One story, one color, done.
