Crockpot apple cider fills the house with the smell people remember from childhood porches. Juice or cider in the slow cooker, whole spices, orange slices if you have them, and a low simmer while everyone else lives their day.

This is hosting without a performance. Set it before guests arrive. Keep it on warm. Ladle into mugs. Beautifully Chaotic Life will not require you to press your own apples.

A splash of bourbon in adult mugs is allowed. Keep a labeled dry pot for kids. Ground spices go in a tea filter or cheesecloth so you are not drinking grit.

**Yield:** About 12 cups · **Time:** 5 min prep · 2-3 hr on LOW

## Ingredients

**Cider**

- 1 gallon (16 cups / 3.8 L) apple juice or cider
- 2-3 cinnamon sticks (or 2 tsp ground cinnamon in a tea filter)
- 1 orange, sliced (optional peel only if bitter)
- 1 tsp whole cloves (or ¼ tsp ground in filter)
- 4 whole allspice berries or ¼ tsp ground
- 2 tbsp brown sugar or maple (optional, to taste)

## Steps

1. Pour apple juice or cider into the slow cooker. Add cinnamon sticks, a few whole cloves, optional star anise, and orange slices.
2. Cook on low 2 to 4 hours. Taste and sweeten with brown sugar or maple if your juice is tart.
3. Strain out spices before serving, or leave a cinnamon stick in each mug for looks. Keep the cooker on warm for parties.

## Use-what-you-have swaps

- Stovetop: simmer gently 30 to 40 minutes covered
- Ground cinnamon and cloves in a tea filter if you lack whole spices
- Maple or brown sugar to taste if the juice is tart
- Pear juice for a quarter of the apple juice
- Fresh ginger slices for a spicier pot
- Cranberry juice splash for color and tartness

## Tips from a real kitchen

- Whole spices strain cleaner than ground. If you only have ground, bag them.
- Orange peel can turn bitter if it simmers forever. Add slices in the last hour if you are sensitive to that.
- Taste before sweetening. Many store juices are already sweet.
- Keep on WARM for parties, not HIGH, so it does not reduce into syrup.

## Make-ahead

Brew earlier in the day, chill, and reheat gently before guests. Fridge leftovers up to 5 days. Freeze flat in bags up to 2 months. Do not leave dairy add-ins (cream, ice cream floats) in the cooker.

## Serve and store

Mugs, cinnamon sticks as stirrers, optional whipped cream for dessert energy. For adults, set bourbon or rum on the side so kids' mugs stay clean. Pair with cookies or popcorn on porch nights.

## If it goes sideways

- \*\*Bitter cider:\*\* Too much peel or cloves too long. Dilute with fresh juice and sweeten slightly.
- \*\*Cloudy grit:\*\* Ground spices escaped. Strain through a fine mesh.
- \*\*Too strong:\*\* You reduced it. Add water or juice to taste.
