# One Christmas Decorating Rule for Busy Homes

Working households do not need a themed vignette on every ledge. They need a rule that stops the bin explosion.

## The rule

**Every surface is a yes or a no.** Yes surfaces get decorations from the bin you already own. No surfaces stay clear for homework, mail, and coffee.

Typical yes: tree, mantel or one shelf, front door.
Typical no: kitchen counters, kids' desks, the dining table you actually eat on (use a runner only if it survives crumbs).

## Pull day (60 minutes)

1. Open the bin once.
2. Trash broken lights and mystery tangles you will never fix.
3. Put yes-surface items out.
4. Close the bin and put it away — do not leave it in the hallway "to finish later."

## If the bin is sparse

Sparse is allowed. A wreath you already have and warm lamps beat a cart of matching newness you have to store in January.

## Kids and ornaments

Give them one low branch or one tray table as their zone. The heirloom breakables stay high. Peace is a decorating choice too.
